Tribute: Tupac Amaru Shakur
September 13th 2006 14:08
You may have ready my recent entry entitled ‘In the spirit of Tributes’. Well here’s my first in-depth tribute to one of the greatest rap artists of all time.
Today is September 13, 2006. It marks the 10 year anniversary of Tupac Amaru Shakur’s death.
As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, has hoped to forge a relationship between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation. Tupac’s foundation is a centre for creative arts open to kids.
On to the great man’s life and career…
Tupac was born in New York and moved to California in 1988. His debut album, ‘2Pacalypse Now’ received critical acclaim while also serving up a hit of controversy for its lyrics. Unluckily it didn’t carve a dent in the charts.
After getting shot five times at a studio lobby, Tupac became paranoid that people were out to get him. His suspicions could possibly be the reason why the East-Coast/West-Coast wars began.
After his near-death experience, Shakur released three albums under ‘Death Row Records’, and on this date in 1996 he was shot 4 times. He died six days after the shooting.
Tupac was well known for his controversial lyrics. Topics that he rapped about included ghetto life, poverty, equal rights and racism.
His paranoia led to his obsession with working in the studio. He practically lived there towards the end of his life. Because of this, he had recorded loads of unreleased material.
There’s a myth going around that Tupac is still alive and pumping out hits. Truth is, he was pumping out thousands of them before his death. Sorry kids, Santa isn’t real.
No rapper is more popular than Tupac. Whether it is the greatness of his music, the controversy outside his professional life, or even his death is a mystery and always will be.
Take care and peace out…
PS: I typed this up late at night so you’re probably reading this one year AND one day after Tupac’s death.
