In the spirit of tributes
September 9th 2006 14:53
Two ambassadors to this country have passed away: Steve Irwin and Peter Brock. One of them defined the Australian image and assisted in the rehabilitation of wildlife, while the other put Australia on the map in world motor sport. RIP to Irwin and Brock
In the spirit of paying tributes, I’ve decided to take a brief look at some special individuals who have shaped the Hip Hop and R&B industry.
NOTE: This will be extremely brief. More detailed tributes to come in the future.
Ray Charles Robinson (23/9/1930 – 10/6/2004)
One of the inspirations of many R&B artists today, Ray Charles played a large hand in the evolution of R&B and African-American identities in the music industry. Without him, we would not have the music industry we have today.
Some big hits: I got a Woman; Georgia on my Mind; Hit The Road Jack; What’d I Say
Tupac Amaru Shakur (16/6/1971 –13/9/1996)
Arguably the most popular rapper in history, Tupac sold more records than any other Rap artist. Towards the end, he was increasingly spending more time in the studio pumping songs like a machine. It is said that he has close to a thousand unreleased recordings.
Some Big Hits: All eyez on me; California Love; Haily Mary; Hit Em Up; Changes
Christopher George Latore Wallace aka Notorious B.I.G. (21/5/1972 – 9/3/1997)
He was the face of the Eastside during the Coast-to-Coast Wars. A one-time best friend of Tupac, Biggie Smalls is also one of the most popular rappers in history. Unlike Tupac, he was deeply respected by rappers as opposed to consumers.
Some Big Hits: Juicy, Hypnotize, Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems, Notorious
Aaliyah Dana Haughton (16/1/1979 – 25/8/2001)
What made Aaliyah’s passing so tragic was that she was on the grip of reaching her peak. After two albums as a teenager, she became a platinum selling artist, model, and movie star. She was a growing talent.
Some big hits: Back and Forth; If your girl only knew; Try Again; Rock the Boat
Lisa Nicole Lopes aka “Left Eye” (27/5/1971 – 25/4/2002)
Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was a member of the popular R&B group: TLC. She was the funky rap chick of the group, but most people did not realize she was also the group’s creative force and a talented pianist.
Some big hits: Waterfalls; No Scrubs
Artist worth mentioning: Big Punn; Eazy-E; Big L; Roger Trapman… and most recently, Proof of D-12.

BTW: to anyone who read this, if there are other artists I've left out at the bottom of the post, please mention it and I'll add them.
