Proof's killer convicted
September 22nd 2006 09:53
Months after the death of D-12 rapper, Proof, his killer is finally convicted.
Proof, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, was shot in a Detroit nightclub on April 11th, 2006.
I was shocked to hear the news since I watched him perform at the Sydney nightclub, ‘Pumphouse’, just three weeks earlier.
Mario Etheridge, the man who shot Proof, acted so in defense… so his lawyer says. Proof fatally shot his cousin, Keith Bender. It sounds more like revenge than defense to me.
The hostilities started when Proof was angered over a dispute in a pool game at the nightclub. Petty, petty, petty.
Etheridge’s lawyer also said that the defendant shot twice at the ceiling in an attempt stop Proof.
Ironically enough, it was these two harmless shots that convicted Etheridge with a charge of illegally firing a firearm. He was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon. The two charges hold an overall maximum sentence of nine years imprisonment.
Not to disrespect Proof, he was a very good artist and all, but why are disputes often solved with guns whenever a hip hop artist is involved? This harks back to my entry on topping hip hop, and the whole notion of being ‘ghetto’ to reach the top.
It’s sad but true, and has left many great talents for dead… literally speaking. If things are to change, then the hip hop fans of the world – yes I’m talking to you readers out there – must change your attitudes towards hip hop images.
Don’t like a rapper just because he/she is all cool and gangsta; like him/her for the music. A recurring theme in many of my posts.
Take care and peace out…
