Artist Spotlight: The Fugees
August 23rd 2006 05:41
Without a doubt, The Fugees are one of the best ever Hip Hop groups to grace the global charts.
Formally known as The Tranzlator Crew, Wyclef Jean, Pras, and Lauren Hill formed in the late 1980’s. Wyclef and Pras were cousins who emceed together since they were kids. Pras met Hill at high school, and the rest was history.
They changed their name to The Fugees for their debut album, ‘Blunted on Reality’ (1994). As much as I love The Fugees to death, I have to admit that the album sucked like a hoover. This was their label’s fault for attempting to turn them “gangsta”.
Their second album ‘The Score’ (1996) was DAMN HOT!!! It was a breath of fresh air that was, bam smack, in the middle of a decade dominated by gangsta rap. Their music had depth and provided social commentary appealing to hip hop fans while maintaining enough pop appeal to soar to the top.
Sadly, The Fugees threw in the towel in 1997. All three members became popular solo artists and it seemed they’d stay solo.
Wyclef released two solo albums and produced a mass of hits for artists such as Carlos Santana, and most recently: Shakira.
Pras, the least successful of the three, still had a huge hit in 1998: ‘Ghetto Superstar’ featuring Mya and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. He’s featured on a plethora of tracks since then.
Finally, Lauren Hill and her award winning album, ‘The Miseducation of Lauren Hill’. Need I say more? Probably just as good, if not better than, the album that made The Fugees famous.
I’m glad to say that The Fugees reunited in 2004 and have performed at several concerts and tours. They’ve also headlined Dave Chapelle’s Bloc Party. Since their reunion, they’ve recorded the single ‘Take It Easy’ in 2005, which did not do well in the charts.
The Fugees were the realest hip hop group of the 90’s. There is a big question mark to their future since their reunion, but no one can deny the influential mark they’ve left on hip hop
Take care and peace out…

I really liked Blunted on Reality, though... not as fine-tuned and sharp as The Score, but I liked the rawness...
