Elton John: Hip Hop's new King of Crunk?
September 2nd 2006 08:17
Could Sir Elton John be the first “Sir” to get jiggy with it?
Believe it or not, the man who’s been at the top of the music business for over 40 years is planning on recording a hip hop album.
“I want to bring my songs and melodies to hip hop beats” said Elton in an interview with Rolling Stone. He outlined his wishes to work with respected hip hop cats like Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Snoop, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West and Eminem.
I’ve got to give it to him; this is experimentation at its finest. I like artists who experiment, and I respect Sir Elton for his ambitions. What I also respect is the fact he’s also admitted that a project like this could be a complete disaster. In fact, I’d go further and say it’s a possible train wreck in the middle of a war-torn country ravaged by an alien race.
I can see all of you agreeing with that last statement. Though, it does seem like a venture doomed to walk the plank of failure, let me remind you of a few things. Elton John sang the chorus for Tupac’s ‘Ghetto Gospel’, and he also performed ‘Stan’ with Eminem at the 2001 Grammy Awards.
I have to commend Elton on his taste of music too. Two of his favourite tracks are Tupac’s ‘California Love’ and Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’.
If he can successfully pull this off, he will be the new King of Crunk – sorry Lil Jon and Yin Yang Twins. Though, I’m not sure how today’s youth would take to a 59 year old white, English guy blazing over an R&B club’s PA system.
None-the-less… RESPECTZ!!!!
Take care and peace out…
