Artist Spotlight: Chris Brown
September 6th 2006 05:15
Here’s a kid gifted with one hell of a voice. It’s hard to believe that at the age of sixteen he’s released an international no. 1 album and toured across the world, performing at clubs that would normally kick a sixteen year old to the curb.
Chris brown has experienced a lot in his colourful sixteen years. He is living proof that anyone can make it in the music industry with nothing more than talent.
He doesn’t come from a city entrenched in hip hop; he’s not a gang banger from the Bronx or Compton. He’s just an everyday kid from a small town in Vancouver.
He grew up on a staple diet of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Hey, didn’t we all? But by the age of 11, people began to notice the teenager’s talents. He started using his voice, at school, to attract the ladies. Now I wish I had a voice like Brown, hehe. Then after a few years, his mother began to hook him up with local producers.
By 2005, Brown was out in full force and gradually got his lead single, ‘Run It’, playing across the worldwide airwaves.
The content of his lyrics might be a little cliché, but cut the kid some slack. At his age, it’s only naturally to sing about puppy love and groovin’ with a mamacita on the dance floor. What really proves his staying power, in a lyrical sense, is the delivery of his lyric and his play on words. His lyrics are cheeky and innovative. His content will only improve with age.
What’s even more impressive is his unique voice. Sure, there are some elements of Michael Jackson and Usher in there, but the more you hear him, the more individual he sounds. I wouldn’t say his vocal range is amazing; because he never shows of his lower register, but MAN CAN THAT KID HIT SOME HIGH NOTES!
Whether his voice has broken or not is another story. It sounds like it already has, though what do I know? I ain’t no biologist.
Look out for Chris Brown’s debut album: ‘Puppy Love’ in stores now.
Take care and peace out…
