Urban Nominees for the ARIA's
September 16th 2006 10:30
The ARIA awards are Australia’s premiere music awards night that recognises Australian artists for their achievements over the past year.
As sad as it is, the Australian hip hop and R&B artists only scratch the surface of an awards night filled with craters of pop and rock.
This year’s ARIA’s will be held on October 29 and the nominees have just been announced. As this is an urban blog, we will discuss the nominees for the “Best Urban Release” Award.
Bliss N Eso - Up Jumped The Boogie (Illusive Sounds)
To tell you the truth, I don’t see these guys winning it. While I respect the trio for there hard work touring with the biggest international acts – Xzibit, Cypress Hill and The Roots to name a few – Bliss n Eso don’t get much radio play. That being said, their hard work warrants a nomination at the Arias.
Hilltop Hoods - The Hard Road (Obese Records)
They are, without a doubt, the favourites to win the award. Of all the nominees, the Hilltop Hoods have the highest sales and airplay on Australian radio. ‘The Hard Road’ is an album that takes hip hop and truly makes it Australian.
Jade MacRae - Jade MacRae (Roadshow Music)
No surprises here. For the past two years, MaCrae has proved she is Australia’s premiere, female R&B Artist. The grain of her seductive voice has made her Australian R&B’s most individual vocalist.
Phrase - Talk With Force (Marlin/UMA)
Melbourne-based rapper, Phrase, lists Bias B, Lyrical Commission, and Hilltop Hoods as his inspiration in Australian Hip Hop. Can he beat his idols in this year’s ARIA’s? Possibly. He’s received critical acclaim and is heavily featured on Australian Radio stations.
Weapon X And Ken Hell - Sneakerpimpin' Ain't Easy (Illusive Sounds)
The Duo might lean more towards the American brand of Hip Hop, but it has proved a winning formula for Weapon X & Ken Hall. Sure it sounds Yankee Doodle, but it embodies Australian attitude. It’s a parody of American rap that brings out the ‘Aussie Larrikin’ in them.
It’s no secret who I think will win (hint, hint, nudge, nudge: The Hoodies), but anything can happen at the ARIA’s. All the nominees are good, although I was shocked that Figg Kidd and Resin Dogs didn’t make the cut.
Take care and peace out…
