Album Review: A Girl Like Me

Some call her the second coming of Beyonce with little originality to break out into her own. For those ignorant fools, I just have to say you’re… um… ignorant!!! It took a while to think of that one.
Rihanna’s latest album, A Girl Like Me, proves she is anything BUT unoriginal. Anyone who listens to her mainstream singles may not understand the diversity in her music, but the other tracks on this record are the unsung heroes that elevate Rihanna to the status of ‘Teen Queen Carribean Hit Machine’.
What really makes A Girl Like Me different to any other R&B album is its Carribean influence. If you’re a sucker for reggae – as I undoubtedly am – you will appreciate Rihanna’s return to her roots.
Tracks such as ‘Kisses Don’t Lie’ and ‘Dem Haters’ are solid reggae tracks with enough pop elements to keep the radio stations drooling, but it’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ that instantly caught my attention with a drum intro taken straight out of the book of Marley. It’s roots reggae at its finest and one can’t help but twirl their dreads or light one up. NOTE: Drugs are bad, don’t do them!!!
For those not so keen on Reggae, Rihanna pulls everything else out of her repertoire. Whether it’s the radio friendly ‘SOS’, club banger ‘Break It Off’, or the emotionally charged ‘Unfaithful’, there is something to please everyone on 'A Girl Like Me'; that’s unless your only love in life is death metal.
Take care and peace out...
